Nigeria's Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, was unanimously elected president of the Nigerian Boxing Federation on Saturday, securing all 12 votes in a ballot that signals a new chapter for the sport amid calls for structural overhauls and grassroots revival.
The election, held at the Package B indoor sports hall of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, saw Edun—a self-proclaimed "transformative boxing enthusiast"—emerge without opposition, reflecting broad support from stakeholders eager for his economic acumen to translate into ring success.
In his acceptance remarks, Edun committed to "reforms and structural changes to elevate boxing across the board," vowing to tackle funding shortfalls, talent development, and international competitiveness in a nation once a continental powerhouse but now lagging behind rivals like South Africa.
The vice presidency proved more contested, with southwest representative Hon. Omonlei Imadu edging out North Central's Mighty Mike 8-4. Imadu, known for grassroots programs that have nurtured young fighters in Lagos and Oyo, hailed Edun's win as "a new dawn." "The minister's passion shines through his initiatives—he's the right leader to restore glory," Imadu said, pledging collaboration with the board to align with Edun's vision.
The National Sports Commission, under Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, drew praise for a "transparent and accountable" process. Dikko emphasized boxing's potential as a "unifier and economic driver," noting Nigeria's Olympic medal drought since 2008.
Edun's dual role raises eyebrows—balancing fiscal duties with sports admin—but supporters see synergy: "His expertise in resource allocation could unlock sponsorships and funding," said Imadu.
With 16 federations under NSC oversight, Edun's tenure arrives as Nigeria eyes the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where boxing remains a medal magnet. Challenges loom—stale infrastructure, coach shortages—but the unopposed nod hints at unity. As Edun steps into the ring, the question: Can a finance boost deliver knockout blows for Nigerian gloves?
